You are humanity's last hope.
In XCOM: The Board Game, you and up to three friends assume the roles of the leaders of the elite international organization known as XCOM. It's your job to defend humanity, quell the rising panic and push back the alien invasion.
Where the armies of the world have failed to oppose the alien invaders, you must succeed. To do this, you must make strategic use of available resources. You must launch Interceptors to shoot down alien UFOs, assign soldiers to key missions, research alien technology, and use that technology to defend your base, all while trying to keep the world from collapsing long enough for you to coordinate one last mission to repel the invaders for good.
One of the most notable aspects of XCOM: The Board Game is the way it incorporates an innovative free digital app into the core of its gameplay. This digital companion will be available as a downloadable app and as an online tool.
The main function of the app is to coordinate the escalation of the alien invasion by randomly selecting one of five different invasion plans. Each invasion plan represents a general outline that alien commanders will use to coordinate the arrival of new UFOs, plan attacks against their base, and respond to their successes or failures as they seek to conquer Earth. The app manages all of these tasks and adds to the tension of the game as it forces you to respond in real time. Then, after moving quickly to coordinate your response, you engage the enemy in the untimely resolution phase and feed the results to the app. Based on these results, the app launches the next attacks of the invasion.
In addition, the app teaches you the rules, monitors the information provided to you by the satellites and tracks the progress of your resistance efforts, yet allows you to enjoy the game on any of the three difficulty levels - Easy, Normal or Hard.
Using this app does more than simply streamline your gaming experience and track your turns in real time; it also allows for a unique and dynamic turn structure. While the variety of game stages remains the same from round to round, the order in which you and your friends must play them can change, as can the number of a given stage. As a result, although you will want to know where the UFOs appear before deploying your Interceptors, alien invaders may be able to disrupt your satellite intelligence and force you to deploy your Interceptors on patrol with limited or no knowledge of the current whereabouts of the UFOs. Similarly, you may be forced to think about the costs of resolving world crises before you know how many troops you will need to commit to defending your base.
The effect of the app is to immerse you deeply into the dramatic tension at the core of XCOM: The Board Game, and ensures that the game presents a challenging, cooperative (or solo) experience like no other. Like the XCOM department heads you represent, you'll have to keep a cool head to prevail.
